Ruane wraps up 2nd Class win for Team Orbit
Primm, NV: Jason Ruane of Lancaster, CA raced error free on Saturday, April 18 to capture his second class 7200 win in 2009. He finished the Primm, Nevada Terrible’s “250” off-road race in just over 4 hours and 38 minutes, besting his closest competitor by over 8 minutes.
For the second race in a row, the Lancaster, CA based race team took the physical lead in the race by the 75th mile in the race and then set the pace. According to his father, Team Owner Mike Ruane, Jason “got into his zone and drove a very smart race.” Sean Moore, also of Lancaster, rode the entire time in the second seat as co-driver.
Driving with a new engine that was designed specifically for a race under 300 miles, they were able to reach speeds as high as 94 mph. “We were fortunate. We did not have a flat tire the entire race and we ran error free,” said Ruane while on top of the winner’s podium. “We had to. Rodriguez (Jason of Alpine, CA) was too close for comfort.”
Ruane and Moore started in 4th group in a first ever, side by side start. Rodriguez started to his right. “We flew off the line. There was no way that Jason was going to let them get the best of us at the beginning,” Moore commented at the finish.
Of the fourteen entrants in the 7200 class, eight finished the course with Jason Rodriguez taking second. The Terrible’s “250” is the second race in the five race, Best in the Desert off-road series. Currently, Jason Ruane is the points leader with 155 points. He is the only driver in his class to finish both races in 2009.
Their next race is the Las Vegas to Reno race in mid-August. This year it will be a 1,000 mile race. It is the only 1,000 mile off-road race staged in the United States.

Jessica's Weekend
Hi
Another fun weekend out at the racetrack. The Vegas track had the PSCA races going on this weekend and invited us out for some testing. It was very cool to hear over the loud speaker, "Hello race fans, we have the Torco Top Alcohol Funny Car here this weekend". We definitely stuck out in the PSCA crowd. Friday night brought us our fastest runs ever, and we were pumped about making runs the next day. I was surprised to see so many spectators there on Saturday; it's the most people I've seen in the stands since I've been driving the funny car. The first run on Saturday started out good. The car's going straight, first shift good, second shift good, I can see the finish line, then "POP". That was the sound of a blower gone bad. It turns out that the body burst panel (which has the Torco emblem on it) flew up well over 200 feet, over the score board, then the wind blew it into the grandstands. I had no idea---I guess you miss that stuff when you're going over 200 plus mph. We just knew that if we were lucky enough to find that part, it would be in 10 different pieces. The mechanical repairs are no problem, but what a pain in the neck it would be finding a new body burst panel that fits perfect and painting it to match the car.
A fan found it and was nice enough to return it the safety crew. Miraculously, that easily bendable piece of carbon fiber didn't have a single crack or scratch on either side!!! My crew chief (and dad) was riding in the back of the pick-up on the return road holding up that panel with the Torco emblem on it to the crowd and the fans were cheering and whistling. We had a whole bunch of fans coming to our pits the rest of the afternoon. Apparently fans love seeing stuff fly (although we intend to not put on any more shows like that for quite some time). We're thinking the Torco sticker acted as a good luck charm, because we can't think of any other reason for that part not to have a single mark on it. THE POWER OF TORCO!!!!

Upcoming Proautosports
Torco fuels once again demonstrates its flexibility and commitment to motorsports. Ryal Greenwood requested a supply of ethanol for Carl Tootle’s 300 whp Miata for an upcoming Proautosports event at FIR, and Torco was ready. The requested E85 mixture was available on site for the March 2009 event, and will also be provided at the upcoming April event, April 17-19, 2009. If there are any other ethanol based cars whose owners are interested in this fuel, please contact Torco Race Fuels, to insure a sufficient supply. Greenwood states that in addition to the obvious greatly reduced emissions, ethanol’s octane equivalent is significantly higher than 100 octane racing fuel, but also burns cooler, thus allowing higher boost levels and therefore more power.

Jason Ruane wins 1st Race at Parker 425
Jason Ruane of Lancaster, CA drove the Team Orbit Motorsports (Palmdale, CA) class 7200-unlimited Ford Ranger to his first class win as driver of record at the Parker “425” sponsored by the Best in the Desert racing association on February 7, 2009.
There were over 400 vehicles representing several classes that would start the race. Only 77 finished. Starting 11th in a field of 19 class 7200 trucks, Ruane quickly took control as he roared off the starting line and out in to the desert. By pit number two he had passed all competitors in his class and had taken the lead. Wes Lewis (Hesperia, CA) sat in the second seat and navigated the entire race.
Parker is one of the toughest races in the Best in the Desert Series and was particularly hard on the entire 7200 Class. Only Ruane, with a finishing time of 10 hours, 17 minutes and Barry Karakas (Oak Hills, CA) finished. Ruane bested Karakas by over 3 hours.
As in all off-road races, not everything went smoothly for the Orbit Team. Heavy rain throughout the race played havoc with the on-board computer. “I had to nurse the truck the last 25 miles because the engine computer got wet,” Ruane commented after the race. “At one point we took on one heck of a lot of water. So much, my entire driving suit was wet. Wes and I were chilled to the bone.”
“We lost the belt to the oil pump too,” Lewis told the team after the race. “With only 30 miles left in the race.” The hour before the Team finished was the longest of the day. Just two years ago, Team Orbit was on a record pace when the engine blew just 8 miles from the finish.
“All we wanted to do today was make sure we finished and finished on top of the class,” Team owner Mike Ruane said after the race. “Our entire team worked hard getting the truck ready and it’s great to see them get the win along with my son. He could not have done it without them”
The next race for Orbit Motorsports will be the Terrible’s Town “250” in Primm, NV on April 18th. The team hopes to have another good outing and do well there as well.

NHRA Warm up a Success!
This past weekend was the NHRA warm up's at Firebird international Raceway in Torco's home town of Phoenix Arizona, to say it was a success would be an understatement. Despite internet attacks and public mud slinging from our competition on the quality of the Nitro we supplied to the pros for testing, teams had nothing but praise for the quality of the product and our service at the track. We look forward to working with many of the pro, sportsman and nostalgia nitro teams in 2009. Chris Ketron of Torco Race Fuels says: "we feel confident that we can not only supply the teams with a full drum of quality nitro we can do so at a price that will stay consistent all year". This is great news for teams who are obviously watching every penny this year.

www.lasvegassun.com
As reported by Sean Ammerman Mon, Jan 19, 2009 (2:37 p.m.) in Las Vegas Sun. Henderson resident Jessica Cherniack did not want to become the smallest funny car driver in the history of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. But with a 5-foot-1 frame, she never had the choice if she wanted to compete. Cherniack, 26, earned the distinction at the speedway's Blast-Off Open Test Session for drag racers on Sunday, when she completed a full pass and received her funny car license. With the license she is eligible to compete, which she expects to do in the California Independent Funny Car Association series this spring. "It wasn't my goal to be the smallest, but just to be out here and drive it down the track safely is enough," she said. Cherniack, who previously raced in the super comp drag racing class, decided to switch to funny cars after her father, Mike Cherniack, obtained one but didn't have a driver. For the past month the Cherniacks, who own an auto repair shop in Las Vegas, have worked closely with tuner Spike Gorr to get the vehicle up to working speed. The test session was an opportunity to work out the kinks and see if Jessica Cherniack has what it takes to handle the 200 mile per hour vehicle. "These funny cars are scary cars to get into," Mike Cherniack said. "It takes a certain type of person to get in there and handle the speed." After a few test runs, Jessica Cherniack said she felt comfortable in the vehicle, despite her size. She hopes to improve her reaction time at the starting light and eventually move up National Hot Rod Association Races. "Once you sit down and everything is adjusted to you it makes no difference if you are 6-foot tall or short," she said. "You don't have time to be scared. You just have to think about what you need to do." Cherniack was one of about 30 drivers who took advantage of open test session on the speedway's drag strip. The speedway opened the strip for all drivers to test and tune their vehicles before the start of the speedway's drag racing schedule, which begins Friday with its first Midnight Mayhem event of the year. The numbers for the annual test session were down from past years, drivers said, due to the economy. The speedway has made changes to aid drivers in the tough economic times, such as consolidating local bracket events into one weekend. "We want to reduce the travel time for some racers, so they don't have to take off work as much," said Chris Blair, vice president of racing operations. "We also want to attract racers from other states, making it so they don't have to travel to Las Vegas as many times a year."
